We were so excited when we discovered Pho Han last December. It was in Richmond and close to our home and work. There was a no MSG sign on the window and it’s another husband and wife team little germ.
Their menu is simple and covers the basic pho, vermicelli, rice plates and drinks.

It was Thanksgiving Day morning and I had a hair appointment in the area. Since a coworker from Quebec told me that he likes the poutine from Frenchies’ Diner, I went in for a quick bite.
The owner was very friendly, the door was open but the diner wasn’t officially open yet (it was before noon). He told me that he was bored from staying home so he decided to open the restaurant and get some cooking done.

Soon after the Fundraising BBQ, my friend G found out about a Social Feed event at Big Lou’s Butcher Shop. Since we had such a great experience with the people and the products from Big Lou’s, G, F and me quickly signed up for this dinner event. L acted too slow and the event was sold out…

We were served right away with the Blood Alley Bitter from Russell Brewing. This was not my first time tasting the Blood Alley Bitter, so I knew what I was getting into. I really enjoy the intense bitterness of this beer which was balanced by a rich, roasted, malty flavour.
But some were surprised on how strong this beer was. This beer was made with slightly higher IBU’s (50).
Next item being served was Sloping Hills Split Pea Soup – Crispy lardons, parsley oil. What is lardon?
I loved this split pea soup, it had the strong taste of “summer”. Both the bacon and parsley oil add texture and flavour to the smooth, yet not overly thick, soup. I really liked how smoky the lardon bites were.
While waiting for the next item to be served, conversations surrounding food were flying at each end and in all directions across the table. Everyone at the table was passionate about food. I had never experience such crowd before. They joined butchering/sausage making/cooking classes, read local food news (Scout magazine is one) and forum as frequently (or even more so) as I do, fearless in experimenting out-of-your-mind recipes and love local food. I would say this dinner would be worth coming to even without the food. But wait, we all love food and it won’t be the same crowd without what would be served at the night. After a visit to the Trout Lake Farmers Market, I met up with G at Little Nest near Commercial Drive for brunch. It’s relatively close to the market by bus. Since I arrived a bit early, I order my very much-needed morning coffee and grabbed a seat first.
It was back in August and I need something cold after my walk from the market with my heavy grocery basket. I ordered an Ice Americano. I really love that they use the letter blocks to track their orders. “S” was my first letter.
I got a Groupon for a 4 courses Summer Lunch at Nu and it was about to expire. By that time, a few of my friends who got the coupon had already used them. So I decided to do a solo lunch by myself; i.e. a date with myself.
Since all the outdoor tables had been taken, I was quickly sat near the patio and presented the menu below.
It looked alright. I ordered a glass of Blue Mountain Pinot Blanc. Afterall, a date isn’t a date without a little wine. 🙂
It took a while for the food to come, so I enjoyed myself by slowly sipping my glass of wine and enjoying the summer breeze. The view wasn’t bad at all.
