After my training session (I think it was tempo running) on a Wednesday evening in August, I was walking in downtown trying to find a place for dinner by myself. I walked to Davie and suddenly remembered that Thai Basil had been on my wish list for more than a year!!! So Thai Basil it was!
I arrived at this little restaurant at Thurlow and Davie. It was an hour from closing and they were still very busy with a few tables of dine in customers but with many more takeout orders. I remembered reading about a spicy minced pork/chicken served on rice dish and couldn’t find it anywhere on the regular menu. So I tried to described it to the server and we didn’t seem to communicate. So I continue to study the menu and 2 mins after, she brought me this lunch menu with pictures! Pad Gra Prow it was! It’s actually not even on their lunch menu. It’s listed as a “also available ask the server” item. 🙂

July 19, Tuesday – Sunny
G and I were looking for a place for a quick bite before watching a movie at Fifth Avenue Cinema. Since I was taking the transit, we agreed to meet at Cambie and Broadway.
I read about La Taqueria’s new Cambie location had just had their grand opening on Monday. The lineup wasn’t long at all, so we went in and ordered our dinner.
We each ordered 3 tacos, 2 meat and 1 vegetarian. I would like to get a horchata, a sweet rice drink. But they told us that it’s not available yet. Also it’s cash only at the moment.

January 18, Tuesday – Cold
Since our last visit at Bob Likes Thai Food on Sunday, D had been whinning about Pad Thai. So the meat I tried to defrost wasn’t ready by dinner time on Tuesday night and we had to eat out. D jumped up and suggested Talay Thai. It’s a small Thai restaurant that we been to once with our friends back in December. We both loved our first visit so it’s a good time to go again and compare the food.
We ordered Pad Thai, Tom Kha with Chicken (Coconut soup) and Pad Med Mamuang Himaphan with pork (Stir-fried with roasted cashew nuts, onion and bell peppers in a spicy chili sauce) . We again asked everything to be spicy! We also ordered 2 Thai beer (Singha) and a bowl of brown rice to go with the spicy food.
The Tom Kha Gai was really good. It’s loaded with flavour of lemongrass, Kaffir lime leaves, Cilantro and fish sauce. It was spiced up with extra fried chili. Continue reading “Talay Thai Restaurant”
January 15, Sunday – Cloudy
I had read raving reviews about “Bob Likes Thai Food” since October 2010. I wanted to try it for a few months and finally get to go last Sunday. I think in general, this is the wrong thing to do, trying out a restaurant with such a high expectation. Everyone was talking about how authentic it is and the result was a big disappointment. I mean if I had no expectation and ran into this little Thai restaurant then I may actually like my meal. Continue reading “Bob Likes Thai Food”
